# Re-apply Filters on Tab-switch

> Control whether switching dashboard tabs carries active filters forward and reapplies them to the new tab, or lets each tab load independently.

When a Tableau workbook has multiple Dashboard tabs, the **Re-apply filters on tab-switch**
setting controls what happens to the active URL filter params when you switch between tabs.

## Where to find it

Navigate to **Settings** > **Tableau** > **Tableau Server Settings**, then open the **General**
tab and find the **Filters and Parameters** section.

The toggle is labeled **Re-apply filters on tab-switch** and is enabled by default.

## What it does

When the setting is on (default):

* The active URL filter params carry over when you switch tabs.
* All filters are reapplied to the destination tab's Tableau viz.
* If a filter was reset on the origin tab (set back to "All"), that reset also propagates
  to the destination tab so stale values do not persist.
* Filters you set on Tab A are still active when you switch to Tab B.

When the setting is off:

* On tab switch, the URL is corrected to reflect only the destination tab's previously
  set filters, with no filters sent to Tableau automatically.
* Each tab loads without active filter reapplication — the Tableau viz renders using its
  own default state.
* Filters set on Tab A do not reach Tab B.

## When to use it

Keep this setting on (the default) when filters should persist across all tabs in a workbook —
for example, a Region filter that applies meaningfully on every tab.

Turn this setting off when tabs cover different subject areas and should not inherit filters
from each other. For example, if an **Overview** tab is filtered by Region and a **Detail**
tab is filtered by Product Category, cross-tab carry-over may apply filters where they do not
belong and cause views to go blank.

Note that this is a global setting and affects all Tableau dashboards on the portal.

## Curator filter panel vs. Tableau filters

Filters from the **Curator filter panel** (sidebar or compact-container filters configured
in the Curator backend) and sticky filters are portal-level controls, so they are carried into
the URL on every tab whichever way this setting is configured. Whether they are also reapplied
to the destination tab's Tableau viz does depend on the setting.

With the setting off, no filters are sent to Tableau on tab switch. A sidebar or sticky filter
that appears in the URL will not be reflected in the destination tab's view until the page is
reloaded.

## Troubleshooting

### A filter I set on one tab is not appearing on another tab

This is expected when **Re-apply filters on tab-switch** is disabled. Each tab loads
independently and no filters are sent to Tableau on tab switch. If you need a filter to be
reapplied on every tab, enable the setting.

### My view is blank after switching tabs

If a view loads blank after switching tabs, a filter from a previous tab may be carrying over
and conflicting with the destination tab's data. Try disabling **Re-apply filters on
tab-switch** so that each tab loads without inheriting filters from others.

If the issue persists, check whether any
[Filter Blacklists](/embedding_using_analytics/filters_parameters/filters#filter-types)
are needed to prevent a specific filter from applying on a particular sheet.
