Curator excels at showcasing embedded Tableau dashboards as a seamless part of your Curator site. *Note: Due to limitations in Tableau’s JS API we do not support embedding worksheets. We recommend adding a worksheet to a Dashboard instead.

Create a Dashboard

  1. Navigate to the backend of the system (e.g. http://curatorexample.com/backend) and log in if prompted.
  2. Navigate to Tableau > Dashboards.
  3. Click on the “New Dashboard” button.
  4. Fill out the Tableau Server, Site, Project, Workbook and Dashboard drop-downs to select the Dashboard you’d like to embed.
  5. Populate the remainder of the fields as desired and click on the “Create” button.

Dashboard Sizes

Curator respects the Dashboard sizes applied in Tableau. We experience that a fixed size ensures consistency in design throughout many screen sizes. You wonder what the best suitable size is? Consider the size of your users’ screens. How much space do you need for navigation, titles, toolbar buttons and margins you want to apply. Do you have dashboards that should take up the full remaining screen? Go to Tableau and set its size to automatic and the Dashboard will stretch to all ends in Curator.

Troubleshooting: Scrollbars Appearing on a Dashboard

If a Dashboard shows horizontal and/or vertical scrollbars in Curator instead of fitting the page, its Size is almost always set to a fixed size (Exactly) in Tableau — for example 1400 x 1000. Curator renders a fixed-size Dashboard at exactly those dimensions instead of shrinking it to fit, so whenever the Dashboard is wider or taller than the space available on the user’s screen, scrollbars appear. Keep in mind that a fixed-size Dashboard also needs a little more room than its configured height when Curator draws Tableau’s own controls around it. Showing the Tableau toolbar adds roughly 30 pixels of height, and showing Tableau’s native tabs adds roughly another 25 pixels. A Dashboard sized to exactly match a user’s screen height can therefore still scroll vertically. There is no Curator setting that overrides, scales, or clips a fixed Tableau Dashboard size, so the sizing has to be changed in Tableau:
  1. In Tableau (Desktop or web authoring), open the workbook and select the Dashboard.
  2. In the Size drop-down, change Fixed size to Automatic, or to Range with a minimum and maximum size, so the Dashboard resizes to the space available instead of rendering at fixed pixel dimensions.
  3. Save and publish the workbook, then reload the Dashboard in Curator.
*Note: The Theme setting Override Tableau Container Size on Mobile/Tablet resizes only the container Curator draws around the embed on phones and tablets. It does not resize the Dashboard itself, so it will not remove scrollbars caused by a fixed size. Likewise, the Dashboard Full-Screen Margin Theme setting applies only to dashboards using automatic or range sizing.
